Lockport hot spot
Posted by wpgsteve on Tuesday, February 01, 2005 (19:58:36) (1031 reads)
The weather on the weekend was beautiful so we decided to avoid the ice shack at Sugar Island (it slow there anyways) and fish outdoors. We headed over to the locks at Lockport because we heard that the bite was really on there, and we heard right! We landed well over 300 fish in just 2 days.
Lockport is usually an extremely popular spot to fish in winter, but this year mother nature decided it needed a break and made it very hard (if not impossible) to fish most of that area. The only spot to fish down there is a small section right by the wall. You can’t get a car there, you need to carefully walk (or fall like I did) down the hill. Once you get to the wall, drill your holes anywhere (click "read more" below to read the rest of the story)

EOM report

The drivability was fairly good out here today. It was still a slow day. I did not mark too many.
I did manage a nice 27.5 greenback. Man was it ever a mild day out there which made it even more enjoyable.
I was using live bait for the first time this winter. Myfriend even managed to catch a goldeye on a salmo baited with a full minnow. WOw that goldeye must have been really hungry

The right tools for the job.

Have you ever walked up to someone on the ice and asked “how is the fishing going†only to hear the reply "it sucks†and you look down at the fishing equipment that they are using and you say to yourself; that’s why.
I consider myself a pretty good fisherman; I usually catch more fish then the people I am fishing with. It is not because I have some secret knowledge of the way fish think or anything like that, I feel the balance of my success is because of the equipment that I use and how I use it. It is not expensive equipment; it is just standard everyday tackle. I see lots of guys just go buy an ice fishing rod and slap a huge reel spooled with 20lb line (and a jig that leaves a crater when it hits the bottom) and they expect to do well every time out. I am not saying you wont catch fish with that setup, but your chances of catching allot of fish is greatly reduced.
The rod and reel: I prefer light and small for walleye/sauger/goldeyes and anything else under 12 lbs. Right now I am using a cheap Quantum Micro rod and reel combo; I think the cost was about $25-30 (Wal-Mart) for the whole combo. I rigged it up with Berkley 4lb XL line. The reason I like this setup is because it is balanced. A medium/light rod and reel, with light line = success in winter. It is hard for the fish to see smaller diameter line and the lighter rod and reel with allow you to use smaller tackle. You want to use light tackle so the fish can easily suck in that bait.

Huge Walleye
Posted by wpgsteve on Saturday, January 22, 2005 (21:17:40) (4252 reads)
I know this is a little old, but for those of you that havent seen this Walleye, you should.

Parishioners at St Eugene in Nipawin, Canadian Martyrs at Carrot River, and St. Mary in Choiceland are well aware of Father Mariusz Zajak's "fishing stories". They're about to hear more. And the news comes with legitimate bragging rights.
The Roman Catholic priest broke the provincial record for walleye by .24 pounds with a 18.30-pound catch January 4, 2005. The previous Saskatchewan record walleye, at 18.06 pounds, was caught and released on Tobin Lake in 1997.
Father Mariusz landed his trophy while ice fishing alone in his ice shack on Tobin Lake at around 5 p.m., Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 4. But there's still more.

Red River Report for Friday
Posted by wpgsteve on Friday, January 21, 2005 (01:34:13) (1406 reads)
We went down to the red today (Selkirk airport) to put in a few hours of fishing. We arrived at about 830am, the road to the shack was a little snow covered but it was still in pretty good shape. We witnessed a few cars/minivans on the river and seem them make it up the hill without any problems.
We finally got our lines in at around 9am. I dropped a pickerel rig down one of the holes and it got a hit right off the hop, we never landed the fish but it was a nice hit.
I then dropped my jig down the hole (yellow whistle jig) and within 5 minutes I nailed my first walleye of the day. I love catching one early simply because I hate getting skunked! A few minutes later I got another good bite, but that was it for action for about 2 hours. We caught another
