walleye warrior marathon
Posted by Steve on Sunday, December 13, 2009 (17:54:12) (97 reads)
The 24 hour marathon portion is non competitive but we have a box of smaller prizes we hand out through the night for those catching fish. The competitive portion of the event will be like any other derby with a scale and a number of prizes for largest fish caught. We also have an inexpensive family portion of the event with three family/kids prize baskets for fish caught. There are a number of kids activities , mascots, etc. The best prizes are for pledge earners(after all it is a fundraiser). When you register for the 24 hour event you will be sent a pledge sheet. Your entry of $50 entitles you to a dinner voucher, a breakfast voucher and one ticket towards the pledge earner prizes. For every $25 raised above that you get another ticket. so basically the more you raise, the more chances to win these prizes. You can bring your own shelter or fish in the main event tent. This is a really casual and easy going event and meant to be more fun and camaraderie than competition. We also have a short fish-off for media/celebrity and the winner of this event has their name on a trophy that is kept for a year. Past winners included Gord Leclerc(CKY)/Ryan Johnson, Chris Cvetkovic(Blue Bombers)/ Craig Stapon(CJOB), Jon Lundberg (City TV)/ Todd Longley (Citycats) as well as Lyle Bauer (Blue Bombers). We are still compiling our sponsorships and prize lists so more on that later.

Bombers fish for a cure
Posted by Jim on Thursday, July 02, 2009 (15:16:23) (33 reads)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Barrin Simpson sets out for a day of fishing at last week's Fish for a Cure event at the Lac du Bonnet town dock. The derby is held to raise money for the Never Alone Foundation.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers converged on the Lac du Bonnet town dock June 18 for the third annual Fish for a Cure derby.
Despite a thunderstorm warning, the day ended up being perfect for the football players and participants who took part.
The Bombers all looked forward to a great day of fishing as they strode onto the town dock at around 9:30 a.m. after getting off the team bus.
“Hopefully we’ll catch even more fish than last year,†team defensive tackle Doug Brown said.
Bombers president and Fish for a Cure founder Lyle Bauer told the Leader the derby was again a huge success, with over $20,000 being raised for the Never Alone Foundation, also founded by Bauer to assist cancer patients and their families through research, education, and support services.
“We always have a great time out in Lac du Bonnet,†Bauer said. “It’s such an important event for us and this year was no exception.â€

Teams of two pay $2,650 for a day of fishing with a member of the Blue Bombers and their very own pro fishing staff (courtesy of Lund) on hand to assist. Teams begin the day at Winnipeg’s Sun Centre before coming to Lac du Bonnet for the main event. They then head back to the Sun Centre for dinner.
This year, boats used in the derby were raffled off to families with children battling cancer. The winner of the derby was nine-year-old Fransesca Abiusi, who caught a nine-pound walleye.

Ready to cast - Kids Fishing For A Cure hits the water June 6
Posted by Jim on Thursday, July 02, 2009 (15:03:10) (28 reads)
By Mark T. Buss
Kids Fishing For a Cure will be getting their lines in the water one way or another this weekend.
The local not-for-profit group dedicated to bringing smiles to the faces of children battling cancer will be holding their 14th annual fishing derby June 6 at Selkirk Park.
The only snag this year appears to be the Red River itself. Because the river current is moving too fast – approximately 21 km per hour – the park’s boat launches are not in the water.
As a result, young fishers and their guardians may be casting from the shore, but that won’t deter event executives like longtime volunteer Bobbi Carter.
“We may not have the boat launches but this is something the kids look forward right after Christmas,†Carter said. “It’s a fun day for the kids and it lets them forget about their treatment for a while and just lets them be kids.â€
Kids Fishing For a Cure is a non-profit organization based in Selkirk that raises money for youths battling cancer. The organization was created by the late John Harber, who used to drive cancer patients to Winnipeg for treatment and was heartbroken to discover the amount of children suffering with the debilitating disease.
Enlisting the services of three avid fishermen to run the derby in 1996, the group has continued to host the annual event, which has grown from an inaugural field of 11 youths to an estimated 95 participants registered for this year.
To date, they have raised and donated over $68,000 back to CancerCare Manitoba’s pediatric unit.
Carter said the derby would not have reached its 14th season without the support of the business community and volunteers.
“The local support we get is amazing,†Carter said. “People have come to know what we do and that we’re a good operation, so when we ask for anything we usually get a good response.â€

Organizers will begin setting up shop at the park around 6 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m.
After registration, children and their chaperones will fish from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where they will return for lunch, a magic show, presentations and awards.
“We’ve got mascots, clowns, displays set up by the fire department and police. They’re going to have a great time,†Carter said. “And the fishing’s not bad either. Last year eight kids caught master anglers.â€
At a special presentation at this year’s derby, Carter said organizers will be donating $1,000 raised at their annual Fishing For a Cure social in April to CancerCare Manitoba for Kendra’s Walk For Kids – a fundraising event organized by 17-year-old Kendra McBain, a St. John’s Ravenscourt Grade 12 student who has spent her high school years battling cancer
Determined to give back to CancerCare Manitoba, McBain held the event at SJR May 29 in an effort to raise enough money for a teen room in the pediatric clinic.
Kids Fishing For a Cure has also recently purchased one year’s worth of Intenet services for the clinic.
Carter said they’re also looking to purchase parking passes – at $150 a month – to ease the financial burden on the families involved.
For more information on the derby, contact Carter at 785-8526 or CancerCare Manitoba at (204) 787-1800.

Walleye Warrior derby raises $15,000 for Never Alone Foundation
Posted by Steve on Saturday, March 07, 2009 (01:25:14) (1252 reads)
Its location may have changed but the money raised was a whopper of an amount at the fifth-annual Walleye Warrior 24-hour Ice Fishing Marathon.
The popular ice-fishing event made its first trip to Selkirk Park last weekend after spending the previous four years at the Gimli Harbour.
The tournament, which attracted over 200 anglers, including 68 who fished for the entire 24-hour period, helped raise over $15,000 for CancerCare Manitoba and the Never Alone Foundation to help individuals and their families in the ongoing fight against cancer.
A $50 fee allowed anglers to participate in the full marathon and provided them with a ticket to a Saturday night dinner and a breakfast Sunday morning.
“($15,000) was a fabulous figure and it just shows where this tournament has come from, what it’s all about, and where it’s going,†said Winnipeg Blue Bombers president and CEO Lyle Bauer Wednesday afternoon. “It has evolved over the last number of years with higher attendance, certainly more profile, and we really have to thank the City of Selkirk and the Mayor (David Bell) for their support.â€
Bauer set up the Never Alone Foundation and has had his own fight with the deadly disease - diagnosed with throat cancer in 2004.
And with the Blue Bombers as one of the main sponsors of the Walleye Warrior tourney, over $75,000 has now been raised through the event. That number, however, will assuredly grow substantially every year.
“It will continue to grow and there are some things we can even do better in the near future,†Bauer admitted. “It was an advantage to be in Selkirk with the close proximity to Winnipeg and we did receive very good support.â€
The annual fishing marathon was an idea originated by Brian Sinclair, who passed away from cancer a month prior to the inaugural event. Despite his passing, though, the first-year event continued in his memory and has become more successful each year.
People of all ages enjoyed themselves out on the ice while taking part in a plethora of activities.
There was a media challenge and Blue Bomber players Chris Cvetkovic and John Oosterhuis took part. Also making an appearance were Bomber mascots - Buzz and Boomer - cruising around the festivities on ATVs.

“It was a full day, but it was anything you wanted it to be,†Bauer noted. “It was something for all ages and it was such a great atmosphere...the excitement of a fish coming through the hole was unbelievable. People had a great time and everyone knows (the money raised) was going to a great cause for cancer and the Never Alone Foundation.
“Very few times do you have an event which tests your heart like that and this was one of them.â€
